Cultural Diffusion

Cultural diffusion is the process through which the idea of a particular cultural are spread through an area beyond the culture who came up with the idea.

One of the most common kind of Cultural diffusion today is the increasing number of fast food chains. The biggest fast food chain, McDonald's, helped spread consumerism through the cultural diffusion. It uses the concept of Glocalization to blend in with the culture of the country that they settle in to. Glocalization according to wikipedia is the adaptation of a product or service specifically to each locality or culture in which it is sold. McDonald's menu is different per country in an attempt to appeal to the taste of the people in that specific country. They transform their menu in order to meet the needs of the local consumers and to stay competitive. For example, the menu here in the Philippines is sweeter to adapt to the taste buds of the Filipinos. And there are also items that are being sold here in the Philippines that are not sold in the US.

If you look at the menus per country you can see that it is different to each other and this is to adapt to the country's culture.

  1. Dave, I know you posted multiple comments on your friends posts. Did you know that there were many more who said very similar things to what you said? One of the things I've been thinking about as a result of all of this McDonalds glocalization talk is, do you think McDonalds is intentionally trying to attract "tourist customers" through the fact that people now know they can get glocalized food at McDonalds' abroad?
